About This Place

Nestled in Chicago’s vibrant West Loop, ROOP Chicago Innovative Indian Restaurant & Cocktail Bar offers a refreshing take on Indian cuisine that artfully balances tradition with modern flair. This is not your average Indian dining experience — ROOP elevates familiar flavors through inventive dishes and a curated cocktail list that makes every meal here a memorable adventure.

The menu is a delightful mosaic of bold spices and thoughtful nuances, perfect for those eager to explore beyond classic curries. Begin your culinary journey with tantalizing small plates like the Chili Cheese Kulcha, a warm, gooey delight that Nik D’Mello raved about for its crave-worthy texture and addictive cheesiness. The Sweet Potato Chaat bursts with vibrant layers of crispy spinach tempura and cooling yogurt mousse, while the playful Green Pea & Goat Cheese Kulcha marries earthy peas with tangy goat cheese for an unexpected but harmonious bite.

Roop’s large plates speak to the heart of Indian home cooking elevated by skilled technique. Signature dishes such as the velvety Butter Chicken laced with red pepper makhani and the subtly spiced Lamb Keema Hyderabadi offer comforting familiarity with sophisticated execution. Seafood lovers should not miss the Whole Sea Bass Wrapped in Banana Leaf, where aromatic herbs infuse every tender morsel wrapped in an exotic leaf packet. Equally enticing, the Scottish Salmon Pulusu features a fragrant coconut ginger sauce paired with saffron mashed potatoes, making it a standout on the menu.

The accompaniments at ROOP are thoughtfully crafted to both complement and elevate the main courses. From the creamy Avocado & Garlic Raita to the vibrant chutneys like fermented chili and tamarind, each addition is made to enhance the overall flavor profile. The Plain, Butter, and Garlic Naan, brushed with rich butter and perfectly soft, serves as the ideal vehicle for scooping up every last bit of sauce.

The ambiance at ROOP complements its culinary creativity beautifully. The space is trendy yet welcoming, with an upscale cocktail bar that invites guests to linger over bespoke drinks like the intriguingly spiced Malabar Old Fashioned or a richly layered Chocolate Rum Ball cocktail. Shreya Vaid’s experience echoes many: an inviting atmosphere paired with exceptional appetizers and cocktails that set an exciting tone for the evening.

It’s worth noting, however, that portion sizes lean toward the modest side, so it’s best to order a variety of plates to fully savor the diverse offerings. Haripriya Vemuri found the balance here refreshing—ROOP’s focus on authentic flavors over Americanized versions creates a genuine taste that transports diners closer to Indian home cooking.

ROOP Chicago is truly a destination for those who appreciate Indian cuisine’s depth and diversity, presented with polished flair and an innovative spirit. Whether you’re sharing small plates with friends or settling in for a full meal, each dish and drink captures a thoughtful blend of tradition and contemporary creativity that will leave you eager for your next visit.

I was really excited to come to Roop because I love Indian food in all its forms, whether it's traditional, fusion, experimental, or just Indian-inspired cocktails. The meal definitely delivered some highs and a couple of dishes I'd skip, but overall it was a fun night. The chili cheese kulcha was incredible, warm and gooey and the kind of thing you immediately want more of. It paired well with the butter chicken. Shrimp koliwada was one of my favorites of the night with that smoky tandoori flavor. The Goan crab cakes came with a thick rich gravy that I really liked even if the crab itself was a little more subtle. Butter chicken was good, creamy and comforting, but not as memorable as some of the other plates. The lamb shank nihari was tender but flavor-wise didn't wow me. Dessert was the star. The gulab jamun cheesecake was the perfect ending and honestly worth the trip alone. For drinks I had the Hot n' Gold cocktail with passion fruit, tequila, and chili mango purée. It was so delicious I ordered a second one. Our waiter was attentive and super nice the whole night. The ambience was dimly lit and just right for a date night. We were seated upstairs and the space turned out to be bigger than we expected. I'd come back for the small plates, cocktails, and definitely the gulab jamun cheesecake!

Serious Concern About Possible Mix-Up in “Jackfruit Biryani” I’m writing to share feedback from our recent visit to Roop, where we celebrated a friend’s birthday. We made our reservation through Resy and carefully noted that four members of our party were vegetarians. The atmosphere and ambiance were wonderful, and both the drinks and appetizers were exceptional. For our mains, we ordered one Jackfruit Biryani and one Paneer Pasanda to share. The paneer was excellent, and at first glance, the biryani seemed great as well. However, as the only non-vegetarian at the table, I immediately noticed something was off when I tasted the “jackfruit.” The texture, flavor, and fibrous consistency were unmistakably that of chicken, not jackfruit. Having grown up eating jackfruit frequently, I am very familiar with its distinct texture — which is flaky and juicy, never as firm or dry as chicken. By the time I realized this, all of my vegetarian friends had already eaten their portions. I called our server to confirm whether there might have been a mix-up, but she assured us it was jackfruit and said, “That’s just how we cook it.” Still unconvinced, we ordered a second Jackfruit Biryani — and this time, it was completely different, matching what jackfruit should look and taste like. When I raised this again, the server continued to insist it was jackfruit and said all biryanis are labelled before being cooked. This was deeply disappointing, particularly for a Michelin Guide–listed restaurant, where I would expect more care and transparency, especially given that several guests were vegetarian. We did not wish to make a scene and paid for both biryanis, but I strongly feel we should not have been charged for the first one. More importantly, I believe the restaurant should investigate this incident seriously — either there was a miscommunication in the kitchen, or a serious error occurred in serving the wrong dish. I’ve attached photos of both servings for your reference. P.S. They did give us a complimentary ice cream for the birthday which we appreciated.

Went here for lunch on a weekend. Food here tastes closer to home than other Indian restaurants that make sweet/americanized version of Indian food. The portion sizes are small so make sure you’re ordering for yourself. One curry portion is sufficient for one person and naan is cut into two small pieces. The food tasted great except for the dahi puri. There’s many ways to make a puri (the shell) outside but it didn’t seem authentic/fresh. It had a rubbery texture to it which is quite uncommon. All in all it was a good experience.
